Sunset Views of the City Skyline
(nyc family photography, family photographer westchester)

It’s always a super special honor to photograph the family of a fellow photographer. There’s no one who appreciates this craft more than someone who does it herself on a daily basis. There’s always a lot of effort that goes into sessions beforehand with the discussions about settings, styling, hair, make-up, best time of year, etc. It’s always worthwhile when everything falls into place so perfectly for an absolutely EPIC session. We laughed; we jumped; we skipped; we acted goofy – whatever it takes to capture those perfect moments. I have to admit that my personal favorite is the couples portrait. We’ve started making an effort to capture these at sessions, when we came to the awful realization that we haven’t had a good picture of ourselves in over a year!! As Moms and Dads, we don’t get in front of the camera often, and even more rarely together. This is magic to us. This is what it’s all about. Love. True love. Even during the madness of a family session with three energetic kiddos running around, lol. Hope you enjoy the peek!!

Decor Tips for In-Home Family Photography
(newborn photography nyc, westchester baby photographer)

It can be nerve-wracking to let a photographer come into your home for family photos. Many families worry about how their homes will look as the backdrop of their photos. So today, this post is all about how to let your home decor style shine and get your place in tip-top shape for your session. Don’t worry though, all of these tips are very easy to implement!

We love to photograph baby and family portraits in meaningful settings within the home. The nursery is always ideal, since parents have decorated the room with so much love and anticipation for the arrival of their little one. You can just feel those emotions when you’re in the room, and we love to capture those tender moments. Decor pieces can often lend to that sentimental feeling and we love to photograph special details such as a handmade baby blanket or toys passed down from previous generations. Don’t be afraid to tell us the story behind your decor!

The master bedroom and living room are also lovely additional settings. We ask parents to clear any clutter, and photograph with creative angles for the most flattering backdrops that are free of distractions. This goes for your decor as well. Try to limit yourself to just a few favorite decor pieces that really express your style in each room to avoid a visually cluttered look. This also allows the pieces you do display to really pop in photos.

One important detail to think about when you’re preparing your home for photos is the proportion of the furniture in your rooms. If your furniture is too big or too small for the room it’s in, it is going to be glaringly obvious in photos.

Step back and take a critical eye to your room layout. Is your rug the correct size for your space? Is your coffee table way too big next to your couch? Changing up the proportions of your furniture can help your room look more balanced. Instead of your eye being drawn to an out-of-place piece of furniture, your decor will grab the attention. This can sometimes be difficult to gauge, so don’t be afraid to enlist the help of professionals like the interior designers at Havenly. They’re an interior design service that’s available completely online, so it’s quick and easy to get some advice before a shoot.

There are plenty of easy, finishing touches you can give a room to give it a quick refresh before a shoot. We love to add a fresh cut flower arrangement to help perk up any area of the house. You can put some of your child’s recent artwork in a frame for a unique personal touch that won’t clash with the rest of your decor. A few books stacked up on an end table can give an interesting pop of color. These are all easy decor choices that can make a big impact on your space.

So don’t be afraid of inviting a photographer into your home for a family session! We’d love to capture your family and your home so those memories can be preserved for years to come. To book your own portrait session, please reach us at our Midtown studio!

Guest Post: How to Stage Your Home for Photos

We’ve all been there before; sure having your portrait taken sounds like a piece of cake, but besides stage fright, when it comes down to posing in front of a camera, there are so many technical issues that can create an off-kilter image – ultimately one that you’re disappointed and unhappy with.

And if you’ve ever tried to create your own still-life for a social media account, by now, you probably know how much harder that can be to get right. Photographing inanimate objects can be quite challenging, to say the least.

So when it comes down to photographing and staging your home, it’s entirely beneficial to know how to get the look and image just right – to your benefit.

Whether you’re looking to sell your home or just want some sentimental images to celebrate the hard work that went into decorating it, there’s plenty of lessons and clever hacks to be learned.

To illustrate the best approach to staging your home for images and potential buyers alike, we turned to Décor Aid interior decorators to provide some fundamental guidance to make everything come together with ease, so you can make your home look as good as possible without having to go through a complete image overhaul.

Start on Curb Appeal

Whether you live in a traditional home or a high rise condo, the exterior of your home can make or break your visitor’s first impression within minutes.  Start with a quick survey of what you can edit out, and what you can update for a better initial appearance. It could something as simple as a fresh coat of paint on your front door, a row of new blooms lining your walkway, or even a new welcome mat. That said, it’s also essential that your entryway, like the rest of your home, should come off as immaculately clean as possible.

Sure, you’re a messy person with a full life. But in reality, there is no one in the world other than a family member or close friend who’ll be able to forgive visual clutter.  Go around your home and edit and organize every single surface, shelve, cabinet, and closet. Trust us, it’ll make a world of difference, plus it will also help you keep personal items out of site.

Group Furnishings Away From Walls

A common decorating mistake interior designers often have to come in and fix is the inclination for clients to house all furnishings flush against the wall.  But, did you know that this is one sure-fire way to make a room feel much smaller than it actually is? Instead, place furnishings closer together towards the middle of a room to make it appear as large as possible, and also more comforting and inviting to boot.

Move Pieces Around + From Room To Room

Just because you’ve always loved seeing that console in your living room doesn’t mean that it’ll make for great staging opportunities.  Quite the contrary indeed as home staging is all about that initial welcoming feel and the possibilities that lie ahead. Rethink furniture placement for more unexpected takes on interior design that’ll leave visitors ready to explore the many design directions they can take in the space.

Adjust Lighting

Reconsider lighting options and schemes to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that’ll open their eyes to investment-worthy values found inside.  Think ultra-bright and warm, and consider replacing your drapes for sheer alternatives to let in as much light as possible.

Go For Neutral Walls

Maybe that fiesta orange you picked up on travels to South America seemed like a stylish idea for your walls at home, but bold colors are sure to distract and are a harder sell in just about any home.  Tone it down with neutrals other than white to again, create an airy, warm, and comforting feel as all-white will come off as too spartan and cold.

Change Hardware

Ultimately, your goal should be to give visitors the feel of ultimate luxury, a home which they could happily see themselves residing in for years to come.  Channel the luxurious aura of a five-star resort and think about luxe updates you can easily manage on your own that won’t break the bank. In the kitchen and bathroom, our interior designers were quick to suggest that new hardware including cabinet and drawer pulls can be easily sourced and installed in just minutes without costing a small fortune.

Display Art Creatively

Bring rooms in your home to life with bold and expressive artworks thoughtfully installed to create the impression of a well-judged home that again, boasts endless design possibilities that they’re sure to find inspiring. Don’t go overboard and keep art pieces to a limit of three per room, but do make a memorable impression by placing your art pieces and sculptures in unexpected areas.

Boys on the Loose in Coney Island
(nyc child photography, outdoors lifestyle family photographer)

This fun-filled session at Coney Island was the perfect way to end our season of outdoors shoots. We’ve had the honor of capturing this gorgeous family for the past four years, and we love to kick it up a notch every year to keep the boys on their toes. Sophie worked together with Mom to get the styling perfect, and the funky backdrops of the boardwalk and surrounding areas were perfect for the iconic Coney Island vibe. It will be hard to outdo these colorful moments, but we’re already brainstorming ideas for next Fall. 🙂

With the holidays just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on this past year. We’ve met so many amazing families since we started this business almost seven years ago, and we are so grateful for each and every one of you. It’s been so wonderful to see your children and families grow over these past years, and we’re so grateful that almost all of our business has come from your kind referrals. Getting to share and capture the most special moments of your lives has filled our hearts with joy, and capturing these fleeting moments has made us better parents to our own children. We love what we do, and We are forever grateful for your support as we continue our journey. Next year holds lots of exciting developments in store for Michael Kormos Photography, and we can’t wait to share them with you soon!!
