Safe, Soulful, and Timeless: Newborn Sessions

in the heart of manhattan

Our style blends timeless fine art with the fleeting moments of your baby’s first days. At Michael Kormos Photography, we believe these elements create a visual legacy uniquely yours. As premier New York City newborn photographers, we craft sophisticated portraits with an elegant edge.

Our baby photoshoots take place at our fully-stocked Manhattan studio. Our space is fully equipped with a baby heater, a white noise machine, and a curated collection of blankets, headbands, and wraps in a variety of colors and tones. Alternatively, many of our clients prefer to have these sessions in the comfort of their home. For those, we'll bring our lighting, blankets, and photo equipment, and setup a makeshift posing table on your bed. This way you can sit back, relax, and watch your little one become a baby model :-)

Your baby’s comfort and safety are our absolute priorities. We have years of specialized experience in professional newborn handling. That is why our photographers only use gentle and infant-led posing techniques. This ensures your little one remains secure throughout the entire session.

It's this philosophy that has made us New York's top newborn photographer for 17 years running!

Sophie was highly organized, produced a beautiful shoot, and really knew how to wrangle a newborn into attractive poses and create the perfect swaddle! The images Michael presented us with are wonderful and just what we had in mind to capture this incredible time in our lives. We highly recommend Michael Kormos Photography for newborn/family portrait sessions and plan to use them again in the future.

Working with photographers for many years, I can honestly say that taking our newborn pictures with Michael and Sophie was the best experience I ever had in a photo shoot.

After months searching for photographers I came a cross with his website and his work took my breath away. His portfolio displays effortless natural beauty, his photos aren't overworked like "now days" most photographers do, and you can see the true essence of newborn baby portraits, which it was exactly what I was looking for. Overall I had an amazing experience and the quality of the work is exceptional. I will use them again as my little angel grows and will recommend them to everyone.

We LOVED our newborn photo-shoot with Michael! I research photographers for a long time. I was looking for a someone who specifically did newborns and would come to my house. Michael and Sophie arrived with beautiful props and all the equipment for an in home shoot. They were extremely friendly and immediately made me feel comfortable putting our 3 day old baby in their hands. They incorporated props that I had and also gladly included our dog in our shoot. The photos came absolutely beautiful- all of our extended family is obsessed with all of the photos and not just because of the subject. They truly captured unique shots with our precious newborn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

about our newborn sessions

How much space do you need for my in-home photoshoot?

We understand that Manhattan apartments are cozy and offer limited space. Our portable studio setup is remarkably compact and efficient. We'll utilize your mattress as a safe platform for posed baby photos. Our natural posing blankets (cotton and wool) are used as a seamless backdrop, with a waterproof pad beneath in case of any accidents. A portable heater and sound machine ensure that your little one stays sleepy and content for the photoshoot. Rest assured that we've photographed in some of the smallest NYC studio apartments to create our signature style of newborn portraits.

What if my NYC apartment doesn't get much natural light?

We always bring along studio strobes to supplement natural light in your home. While some photographers work only with natural light, many New York bedrooms unfortunately do not have a sufficient amount - especially with cloudy or overcast skies. This results in digital artifacts like excess noise and poor color retention. We don't believe in sacrificing our photographic quality. Our professional battery powered Profoto B1 strobes from Sweden are silent and emit flash at 1/11,000th of a second to ensure the comfort and safety of your newborn. The portraits captured in your home will look exactly like those taken at our studio, since the lighting is the same.

How do you ensure safety of my baby during the shoot?

Your baby’s safety is always our top priority. All of our blankets are made from baby-safe fabrics (cotton and wool), and along with our wraps and equipment, they're thoroughly sanitized beforehand. During your newborn photoshoot, we follow cues for feeding, soothing, and cuddle breaks for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. We use gentle baby-led posing techniques with support for baby’s head, neck, and airways. Baby is kept warm with a portable heater, and we make sure the temperature is optimal for different poses. We strive to create a calm environment to help keep your baby comfortable throughout the session.

Do you include photos with parents and siblings?

A newborn portrait session is truly a celebration of the newest addition to your family. We love to include parents, siblings and pets for intimate family poses. We can use a bare wall as a seamless backdrop, or incorporate meaningful settings in your home for lifestyle concepts. For sessions at our midtown photo studio, we use a seamless white backdrop. We usually start with newborn portraits for the first half of the session, but we're flexible to begin with family photos if the older sibling has better energy in the early morning. We're always happy to accommodate toddler nap times when planning the workflow for your newborn photoshoot to ensure a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

How long does an in-home newborn session take?

In-home newborn photo sessions typically last between 2 to 4 hours. Our setup generally takes around 15 minutes, and then we’ll focus our time on capturing a variety of solo newborn, sibling and family poses. This longer timeframe is intentional, as newborns often need frequent breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing. Your newborn photoshoot is a special, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we don’t want you to feel rushed.

What should we do to prepare our Manhattan apartment for the photoshoot?

Preparation is simple and stress-free. We love as much natural light as possible, so opening blinds and curtains before the session is helpful. We recommend tidying your bedroom in advance, so we can easily set up our lighting, space heater, blankets, knit wraps, and accessories. Please style any meaningful area in your home that you'd like to incorporate (e.g. nursery or living room), or we can use a bare wall (at least 6 feet wide) as a seamless backdrop. Some clients prefer to use the building common areas (such as the lobby, or rooftop) for family portraits, which is perfectly fine. Our Welcome Guide will provide you with additional prep details to ensure a relaxed experience on the day of your photoshoot.

what to expect

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, Sophie will discuss with you various facets of your upcoming newborn session. Your newborn retainer will secure our availability around your baby’s due date, while the balance of your shoot will be due once your little bundle of joy arrives. Based on your baby’s birth weight, how your recovery is going, and other factors such as jaundice, etc., we’ll select your session date - generally within the first two weeks after birth.

In Studio or In-Your-Home

Once we receive your newborn retainer, you’ll receive our comprehensive Welcome Guide via e-mail. It will contain everything you need to know about your upcoming photoshoot. You can choose to have your baby portrait session at our luxury midtown Manhattan studio, or in the comfort of your home.

Studio newborn sessions

Michael Kormos Photography is located in the heart of Big Apple, on West 29th Street between 7th and 9th Avenues. Indoor parking garage with valet is located adjacent to our building. If you’re arriving by public transit, all of the main commuter rail lines are just blocks away at Penn Station.

Our studio is fully stocked with cotton and wool knit blankets of various colors, and all of the same headbands, wraps, and props. Once you arrive, you’ll make yourself comfortable in our reception area, with water and refreshments, a baby changing station, and sample albums and wall art. If your baby is feeling sleepy, then we’ll start with their solo portraits while you sit back and relax. On the other hand, if your baby is wide awake, we’ll begin with poses with Mom & Dad.

In-Home Newborn Sessions

There is nothing like the convenience of having us come to you. For in-home newborn photoshoots, we only ask that you tidy up your bedroom. We’ll need a bed for posing your baby, and setting up our non-intrusive “studio”. For poses with Mom & Dad, we generally utilize a wall in your apartment as the backdrop. If your Manhattan apartment offers a view of the NYC skyline, we can implement that too! Please discuss your vision with Sophie during your initial phone consultation so that we can get a better sense of what to expect when we arrive.

On the Day of your Photoshoot

Getting your Newborn ready

Your newborn will be photographed mostly nude or in a cozy wrap, with knits and accessories with blankets set up on your bed as a seamless backdrop. Please keep baby awake for a full hour (warm sponge bath usually does the trick) before we arrive. This will ensure that baby is sleepy for their portraits. Begin a generous feeding half hour before the photoshoot, so we'll enjoy a calm and content mood. Baby should be "undressed" in a loose diaper and swaddle for easy transition. Avoid any greasy face creams or diaper creams on the morning of your shoot.

Getting yourself ready

Please have yourselves camera ready for your appointment. Soft neutrals like whites, creams, beiges, and light earth tones for a timeless look. There is beauty in simplicity. Avoid bold patterns, logos, or bright colors to focus on your family. Coordinate by mixing textures (knits, linen, cotton) within a similar color palette. Choose comfortable, flattering pieces like flowy dresses, soft sweaters, or relaxed tops that allow natural movement. Keep accessories minimal, and remove sports watches or large jewelry that may be distracting.

Proofing Gallery

Approximately two weeks after your newborn session, you'll receive an e-mail with a link to your very own Proofing Gallery. During our image curating process, we compare every image for composition, lighting, posing, sharpness, and overall appeal. Only the images that meet our strict quality standards get selected. As you browser through your proofs, you'll be able to "heart" your favorite images. These selections are then sent for editing, while the rest of the images are purged from our archives.

Our Signature Editing and Final Gallery

At Michael Kormos Photography, we believe in genuine portraits that capture your newborn in their truest form. Our signature editing is an integral part of our creative process, and includes the following:

- skin blemish and redness removal

- hair frizz/flyaways

- wrinkles on clothing

- high-frequency filter

- dodge & burn

Once you receive your Final Gallery, you can expect to see your baby photos at their absolute best!

Displaying your Portraits

Most people choose to display a solo newborn portrait above the crib in the nursery. Usually a 16x20 or a 20x30 size works well. It will give the nursery in your Manhattan apartment a sense of identity, and serve as a constant reminder of just how precious your baby was when they were born. We recommend a series of square prints arranged either horizontally, vertically, or in a square pattern, which focus on details. A closeup of their hands or toes, a closeup of their face. These add context and narrative feel to your nursery.

Ordering your Prints

Your Final Gallery will allow you to download your digital portraits in high resolution to your computer. We strongly recommend making a backup of these files. You'll also be able to order prints, albums, and wall art from your Final Gallery. Please scroll below to see the full offering of our products.
