HAMPTONS FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

MKP was our first "baby", conceived 17 years ago. Since then we've been blessed with four beautiful children, and the passion for our family photography business has continued to grow. As parents ourselves, we understand all too well that childhood is a paradise of fleeting moments. Your little ones will never be this small again, and NOW is the time to capture your special memories as beautiful works of art.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We love the coastal aesthetic. What is the best time of day to schedule a beach portrait session for that perfect, golden light?

Our portrait sessions are scheduled 1-hr before sunset. When the sun is that low in the sky, its lower intensity is much more manageable. You won't have to squint or wear sunglasses as it reflects off the sand, and its amber glow adds a natural warm tone to your photos. Each and every photo that you see in our vast gallery of images was taken during this "golden hour".

Do we need special permits for a photo session at Hamptons beaches (like Main Beach)? If so, do you handle that?

The good news is, no permits are required for non-commercial photo sessions. Certain locations (such as private country clubs, botanical gardens, etc.) may require pre-arranged authorizations. Luckily, all of the locations in the Hamptons that we normally recommend do not. That's one less thing to have to worry about!

We value our family’s privacy. Are you willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and keep our gallery entirely private?

Absolutely. In fact, we offer a "Privacy Add-On" during the checkout process. By selecting this option, your images will be tagged as private, and will not be shared on social media, our website, nor anywhere else.

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate (sudden ocean fog or summer rain)? What is your rescheduling policy?

We're well aware of the late-afternoon sea fog, as well as the thunderstorms that seem to roll in from out of nowhere in the summer. We keep a close eye on the forecast, as well as doppler radar to steer clear of any incoming cells. Sea fog doesn't impair our ability to take photos, but it does grey out the background somewhat. Northern beaches that face the sound are generally fog-free throughout the day (such as Foster Memorial Beach, Sammys Beach, or Gerard Drive Nature Park.

Do you provide raw, unedited files, or do we receive a curated gallery of fully retouched images?

Shortly after your photoshoot (usually within 2 weeks), you'll receive a Proofing Gallery with the best images from your photoshoot. We narrow down this list and eliminate any images with bad posing, lighting, or where the focus isn't razor sharp. This Proofing Gallery allows you to easily select your favorites, which are then tastefully edited. Frizzy hair and clothing wrinkles are minimized, intrusive distractions removed, and everyone is made to look their best without looking "photoshopped". Because RAW files are not considered a finished product, they are not available for purchase or download.

We believe that a great portrait has the power to take your breath away, make you laugh with delight, and move you to tears. Our style is capturing real moments that tell a story, while showcasing the wonder, joy and excitement of childhood. All this while encompassing the beautiful colonial scenery of the Hamptons, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. We love to get creative with beautiful light, artistic perspectives, and funky angles. Most of all, we love to present those precious memories as stunning works of art that your family will cherish forever. We strive to provide a memorable experience that will become an annual tradition. There's nothing that warms our hearts more than seeing your children grow over the years!

We splurged on some family portraits while visiting East Hampton this summer and it was SO WORTH IT! Michael & Sophie were incredibly professional and communicative from start to finish. The proofing gallery was delivered quickly, and the final images shortly thereafter. They really go the extra mile to produce a quality product you will treasure for years to come. We will always remember this family trip, and now have beautiful keepsakes to frame. Highly recommend!

We are so lucky to have found Michael and Sophie based on the stellar reviews they have. They are an incredible team. Our family photos from the recent photo shoot in October are absolutely magical. Our kids, aged 8 and 4, tend to be very awkward in front of the camera. Wow! Michael and Sophie knew exactly how to bring out their natural smiles and captured their effervescent personalities. We absolutely loved the location they chose (Sammys Beach near Sag Harbor). From the initial inquiry to the finished product, they have been so responsive and were super accommodating with weather related rescheduling. Lastly, the stunning photos were ready in record time. We cannot recommend them enough for family photography.

We first met Michael and Sophie Kormos when we had our first child, several years ago. Now we live 1,500 miles away but had to come back and get updated family portraits with them, because simply - they are the best family portrait creators we’ve ever dealt with. Sophie and Michael both have an excellent photographer’s eye and ability to capture our kids’ personalities during the brief time small children will allow for a session. Being parents themselves, they have a wonderful demeanor and ease with children that can’t be overstated.

BEST LOCATIONS

for your baby & family photos in the Hamptons

THE ICONIC HAMPTONS BEACHES

Beginning in the 1870s, when Long Island Rail Road connected New York City to the East End, the Hamptons have become a popular summer colony. Its beaches are world-renown for their soft sugary sand, dune systems, and deep shorelines. Here is out list of the most iconic beaches in the Hamptons best suited for your photoshoot:

EAST HAMPTON MAIN BEACH
Accessible by driving south on Ocean Ave, East Hampton Main Beach is amongst the most popular in this part of Long Island. Gentle dunes, grasses, and driftwood add subtle context to family portraits. Golden hour (1-hr prior to sunset) usually falls around 7:30pm during the summer months, by which time most of the crowds have dissipated. This allows us to focus on taking photos of you and your children without any distractions. PARKING (regulated by the Village of East Hampton): FREE (after 6pm).

OCEAN RD BEACH
Drive south on Ocean Rd until you reach the end. This beach is nested right between the popular Mecox and Sagg Main Beaches, without the strict parking permit requirements. A popular beach for the residents of Bridgehampton, Water Mill, and Sagaponack. It offers sweeping views of the Atlantic with a broad shoreline, and soft sunset light. PARKING (regulated by the Town of Southampton): FREE (after 6pm)

SAMMYS BEACH & GERARD DRIVE NATURE PARK
Beautiful alternatives on the Gardiners Bay side. These quaint beaches offer a calm, gentle surf and practically no crowds. To access Sammys Beach, drive east on Sammys Beach Rd until you reach the end. A wooden farm fence lines a sandy dirt road, which offers a rich setting for your family photos. For Gerard Drive Nature Park, drive south on Gerard Dr until the end. This spot marks the end of a small peninsula, which allows us to take your baby portraits with a wide array of brush, rock outcrops, and a pebble beach settings. PARKING (regulated by the Town of East Hampton): FREE (after 6pm)

TWO MILE HOLLOW BEACH
A great option for those families that live in Amagansett. Two Mile Hollow Beach sits at the end of Two Mile Hollow Rd. It offers larger dunes and grasses, and a quieter setting. The parking lot offers multiple branching pathways to the beach, allowing us to capture your family photos nested between tall grasses. These make a great foreground element, and add depth to your baby portraits. PARKING (regulated by the Village of East Hampton): FREE (after 6pm).

Mulford Farm Museum

Offering a genuine, historic flair dating back to 1680, this restored colonial farmstead boasts timeless cedar wood textures, sculpted gardens, and an authentic Hamptons feel. For those families that don't necessarily want a beach-themed photoshoot, Mulford Farm Museum ranks amongst our favorites in the East Hampton area.

Wölffer Estate Vineyard

Rows and rows of grapevines, lush greenery, and that enchanting aroma. Centrally located between East Hampton and Bridgehampton, Wölffer Estate Vineyard offers a unique setting for your family photos. Grapevines reach a height of 6-ft in late July, so we recommend scheduling your portrait session in August if you plan to take advantage of this picturesque setting. While their main entrance can be busy and crowded, we generally photograph from their vine stand, on Montauk Highway.

Montauk

Nested at the edge of East End, its laid-back feel and surfer-town vibe are the chilled out alternative to the Hamptons settings. Town Rd dock is lined with fishing trawlers and lobster traps. This authentic, seasoned maritime setting is unlike any other in the Hamptons, and our clients absolutely love it. If you still want to include a beach theme, the nearby Sunset Beach is filled with round boulders, tall grasses, and a sweeping view of Block Island Sound, for that picture-perfect sunset.

Sag Harbor & Shelter Island

Away from the Atlantic shore, Sag Harbor's Foster Memorial Beach, which faces the Noyack Bay welcomes you with its relaxed shoreline. Surf is gentle, crowds minimal, and the winds considerably calmer. If your children are younger than 2 years-old, this is the perfect spot to capture their photos. PARKING (regulated by the Town of Southampton): FREE (after 6pm). If you happen to reside in North Haven or Shelter Island, we adore Shell Beach. Nested on its own peninsula, its combination of brush, trees, weathered groins, and shells galore offer plenty of elements to keep your photos vibrant and unique.

Your Home

Capturing your family portraits right at your Hamptons home frames your summer memories within your own private sanctuary. Because the kids are already familiar with the environment, their true personalities shine. Your own space also allows us to easily control outside distractions. You get the ultimate luxury of zero travel time, plus, you can easily step inside for a quick wardrobe change or a hair and makeup touch-up. The result is a deeply personal, stress-free session that feels like a relaxed afternoon at home.

Nantucket

For those of you residing or vacationing on the picturesque island of Nantucket, boy do we love photographing here! Nantucket village, with its 17th century architecture and cobblestone streets carries a charm all its own. We generally start at the Main St square, then move to Easy St where charming cottages add to the overall flair, and finish the session on Old South Wharf. Those unique wharf cottages are unlike any other in the area, and there will be no doubt in anyone's mind where your family photos were taken. Despite its remote location, Nantucket remains our most favorite little gem.

Martha's Vineyard

This gorgeous island is packed with micro environments, and an absolute dream for family photos. The gingerbread cottages on Lake Ave are a must, especially if you have little children. For a more seaside theme, Aquinnah Cliffs are rich in color, texture, and just pure awe factor. A setting you won't find anywhere in the Hamptons. Lastly, North Water Street in Edgartown is lined with pristine, historic sea captain's homes from the 19th-century. At the end of the path sits the iconic cast-iron Edgartown Harbor Light surrounded by a beach of wild beach grass. This is the perfect spot for classic, clean, nautical portraits.

How to Style Your Family for a Hamptons Photoshoot

The importance of styling in creating a cohesive and visually appealing photo cannot be overstated. Coordinated outfits that complement each other and the Hamptons scenery can elevate your family photoshoot to new heights. Here are a few tips to get you started, and you’ll find more inspiration by checking out our portfolio of Hamptons Family photography.

  • Color Palette: Choose a cohesive color palette that complements the natural surroundings of the Hamptons. Soft pastels, earthy tones, and coastal colors like blues, whites, and sandy neutrals are always a safe bet. Coordinate colors between family members, but avoid matching outfits exactly as it will look outdated.
  • Patterns & Textures: Avoid overly busy patterns, as they can be distracting. Instead, opt for subtle patterns such as thin stripes, small checks, or delicate florals. Incorporate different textures like linen, cotton, and knits to add depth and interest to your photos without overwhelming the composition.
  • Get Everyone’s Input: Involve each family member in the styling process to ensure they all feel comfortable and confident in their outfits. This collaboration helps everyone look their best and adds a personal touch to your photos.
  • Hair Styles: Choose hairstyles that suit the location and weather conditions. For windy beach photoshoots, consider hairdos that keep hair in place, such as braids, ponytails, or neat buns. Loose, natural waves also work well and add to the relaxed, beachy vibe.
  • Accessories: Simple and minimal accessories can enhance your family’s outfits without drawing too much attention away from the subjects. Think about adding elements like straw hats, light scarves, or even barefoot sandals for beach shoots. Avoid large, flashy jewelry that might detract from the natural beauty of the setting and your family’s genuine interactions.

Practical details matter too. If you have a baby, remember to use bibs to avoid last-minute wardrobe malfunctions, and consider bringing extra outfits for quick changes. This attention to detail ensures your photos are perfect, down to the smallest feature.

Preparing Your Little Ones for a Smooth Photoshoot

A successful photoshoot with young children requires careful preparation. Whether you’ve got a baby, a toddler, or children of all ages, here are some tips to ensure a smooth experience:

  • Ensure your child is well fed and well rested: A full tummy and a good nap can do wonders for your little one’s mood. Schedule the photoshoot after a meal and a nap to ensure your child is content and cooperative. This is especially true if you have a baby or toddler.
  • Bring drinks and snacks: Keep your child hydrated and bring along some non-messy, favorite snacks to keep them energized and happy throughout the session.
  • Tell them about the photoshoot and get them excited: Prepare your older children by talking about the photoshoot in advance. Explain what will happen, tell them about the photographer, and get them excited about seeing the camera and playing in a fun location. Keep the conversation light and positive to build anticipation.
  • Let our photographer know about your child’s interests: Sharing a little bit about what your child loves, whether it’s a favorite game, song, or character, can help the photographer engage with them and capture genuine, joyful expressions. We are very experienced with photographing children, but it never hurts to have insider info!
  • Don’t stress about perfection: Embrace the candid moments. Children’s natural expressions and movements make for the most heartwarming photographs. Focus on enjoying the experience rather than stressing about perfect behavior.
  • Bring their favorite items (but no screens, please!): Having a beloved toy or blanket on hand can provide comfort and bring out smiles. Leave the phones and tablets at home, which can be distracting and may result in less interactive and engaging photos.
  • Make sure their clothes are comfortable: Select outfits that are not only coordinated and photogenic but also comfortable for your child to wear. This will help them stay happy and relaxed, contributing to natural, giggle-filled photos.

By following these tips, you can help create a positive and enjoyable photoshoot experience for both your little ones and the entire family. Our photographers’ experience in working with children ensures they will feel at ease, allowing us to capture their authentic smiles and playful personalities.
