LOCATIONS

FOR NYC PHOTOGRAPHY

Central Park is a photographer’s dream, blending iconic city views with timeless charm. You can romp through the wide-open greenery of Sheep Meadow for skyline views, or head to Bethesda Terrace for grand, European-style architecture and soft, glowing light. For a touch of romance, the stone arches of Gapstow Bridge offer a picture-perfect backdrop that feels straight out of a movie - complete with The Plaza Hotel in the background. These iconic landmarks are exactly why so many travelers choose this park for their New York vacation photos with us.

The north end of Central Park is a quiet paradise for little ones. Shakespeare Garden offers a fairytale maze of flowers and rustic paths, while the East Meadow provides a peaceful, wide-open lawn for babies to play freely. For a touch of elegance, the Conservatory Garden features stunning fountains and manicured blooms that feel like a private oasis. These serene spots are perfect if you are looking for a professional Central Park photographer for baby portraits who knows the park’s hidden gems.

New York's waterfront parks perfectly blend harbor charm with big-city energy. Wagner Park offers lush greenery and front-row views of the Statue of Liberty, while Gantry Plaza State Park showcases a cinematic, sprawling look at the Manhattan skyline. For the ultimate "New York" moment, Brooklyn Bridge Park provides an iconic mix of pebble beaches and world-famous architecture. These stunning vistas are exactly why visitors hire a pro vacation and portrait photographer like Michael Kormos to document their trip.

Tribeca is a favorite for its quiet cobblestone streets and chic lofts, while the Upper West Side provides a refined, cinematic feel with its elegant brownstones. For a creative, artsy vibe, Red Hook features rustic warehouses and stunning waterfront views. Capturing these distinct vibes is why booking Michael Kormos Photography, who offers a specialized photoshoot experience is so important.

Family photoshoots include a select number of digital portraits and printed products. Unedited images are not provided. You may purchase additional digitals and artwork following your photoshoot.

frequently asked questions

What are the best locations for those iconic NYC family photos? (Central Park, DUMBO, Times Square, or the High Line?)

SKYLINE VIEWS FROM LONG ISLAND CITY AND WEEHAWKEN

Long Island City (Gantry Plaza State Park) and Weehawken, NJ offer sweeping views of the New York s kyline. If you hope to capture the grandeur of skyscrapers rising above the Hudson (or East) river, these are your best bet. Sessions here are scheduled 1-hr before sunset to take full advantage of the golden hour light.

CENTRAL PARK

Nothing says New York than classic art-deco buildings rising up over the elm trees of Central Park. Southern parts of the park offer a number of viewpoints, including Gapstow Bridge, Wollman Rink, and Sheep Meadow. Be forewarned though, these places can get pretty crowded on weekends, especially during the busy summer & fall tourist seasons. We strongly recommend a weekday session if your schedule allows. If you plan to include your pet in your family photoshoot, please know that Sheep Meadow does not allow dogs

COBBLESTONE STREETS OF SOHO AND TRIBECA
Castt-iron architecture, cobblestone streets, and designer boutique shops. SoHo (South of Houston St) and TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal St) are two Manhattan neighborhoods offering unmistakable charm. With plenty of stoops, railings, and porches, posing opportunities are plentiful, and your family will have a great time walking down these historic streets, which were once the home to textile factories.

BROWNSTONES OF UPPER WEST SIDE
As one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Manhattan, brownstone townhomes line many of the streets just west of Central Park (such as West 74th Street). With prominent landmarks like the Dakota (former residence of John Lennon, and other high-profile celebrities), San Remo, and The Dorilton, Upper West Side continues to be one of the most charming neighborhoods of the Big Apple.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK AND SOUTH STREET SEAPORT

If you’re looking for more of a waterfront feel, both the Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Southstreet Seaport offer unique perspectives of New York’s East River. Brooklyn Bridge Park has been recently redesigned to include contemporary decking and railings, Jane's Carousel (built in 1922, and preserved in its all-glass enclosure). Manhattan Bridge - which linked Brooklyn and Manhattan in 1909, is a photographic gem - especially when viewed from Washington St. On the other hand, Southstreet Seaport features an iron-hulled Wavertree from the 19th century, and unique perspectives of Brooklyn Bridge.

Can we visit multiple locations in one photo session? (e.g., Brooklyn Bridge and the West Village.)

Due to New York’s vast size as a city, and the distance involved between many of its iconic locations, squeezing them into a single photo shoot isn’t feasible. If you’re interested in capturing your family portraits in a multitude of settings, we strongly recommend booking two separate sessions on two different days. This will give you and your loved ones plenty of time to “reset” your looks, change wardrobe, and touch-up your hair and make-up - all without feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

What type of transportation do you recomment? Do we walk, take the subway, or hail a cab?)

This ultimately depends upon where you’re staying (or coming from). NYC natives are keen on taking public transport for its efficiency (and speed). However, there are times when your family may be more comfortable taking an Uber (i.e. when you have little babies that require a stroller, or are bringing props and other accessories to your photo session). If you’re visiting NY and staying at a hotel, a yellow taxi may be your best bet.

Do you know any hidden gems - without the tourist crowds?

Fort Greene in Brooklyn offers a comparative setting to the Upper West Side with fewer people indeed (such as Carlton Ave). The waterfront of Red Hook, Brooklyn is lined with industrial factories that have a weathered look of their own (especially around Red Hook Dock). This location is seldom frequented by crowds due to its detached location. However, if crowds are your concern, we’d be happy to recommend specific days and times that would alleviate your worries. Call Sophie at the studio (212.544.0102) and let her know your vision. She’ll be happy to steer you in the right direction. In general - weekday evenings (Monday thru Thursday) tend to have far fewer crowds.

Are there permit fees for certain parks or landmarks? (e.g., Grand Central or specific areas of Central Park.)

Conservatory Gardens in Central Park - which boast curated flower beds, and one of the most stunning displays of shrubs, trees, and flowers - requires a photography permit. This portion of Central Park is very popular with wedding photographers, so be sure to fill out the permit application here once you’ve scheduled your portrait session with us. As for busy transit hubs such as Grand Central terminal - we strongly discourage these locations for your family portraits. While the main concourse can feel resplendent, it offers very poor lighting, and busy crowds.

Can we take photos at an observation deck? (Summit One Vanderbilt, Edge, or Top of the Rock)

While these locations sound like a great idea in theory, the high winds at those heights, the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, and the fact that they’re privately owned makes the logistics of a fun-and-enjoyable family photoshoot difficult. If you’re looking for a look that captures the broad NYC skyline, we would recommend either LIC (see above) or Weehawken, NJ.

How do you keep strangers out of our photos? Do you use specific angles or Photoshop?

Believe it or not, some of our clients actually prefer the look of crowds in the background! It maintains authenticity of being in a big, bustling city. However, we also understand the obtrusive nature of a random jogger wearing a bright green shirt. The trick starts with the camera. We confine ourselves to using narrow-angle telephoto lenses, which limit our field of view, and compress perspective. Lenses such as the Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4G lens yield creamy bokeh (the aesthetic quality of out-of-focus parts of the photo). In doing so, they render most other elements in the background blurry. The second part of our process is done in post processing, where we remove those obtrusive elements (such as trash on the ground, or a random bystander waving to the camera) using generative AI tools in Photoshop. Rest assured, if you prefer a clean portrait free of distractions, we’re happy to deliver!

What time of day is best for lighting, and fewer crowds?

If you’re the type who likes to sleep late, this answer may not be for you. Practically all locations in NY are unusually crowd-free in the early hours of the day (Sunday mornings especially). So if you’re dead-set on having a photoshoot on Brooklyn Bridge, this is about the only time we can pull it off. That's before thousands of walkers, joggers, bicyclists and tourists clog its narrow pedestrian path. However, the news isn’t all grim. Most of our other hand-picked locations work perfectly fine on a weekday afternoon. Give Sophie at our studio a call (212.544.0102) and let her know your preferences. She’d be happy to share with you photos from some of our past sessions, taken in specific places, so that you can get a better sense of what to expect!
