A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MICHAEL...

1987

For Michael, it all started when he was six years-old. Using his grandfather's Exakta II film camera, he was amazed at the results of night time photography. Using a tripod and long shutter speeds, he began experimenting with light painting every chance he got. As he grew more skillful, Michael began using filters, and shifted his focus onto landscapes.

2009

Fast forward twenty-two years, everything changed in 2009. With the birth of his first daughter, Michael shifted to portrait photography, and pretty soon, people took notice. He was being commissioned by friends and neighborhood families to take photos of their little ones—and everything grew from there.

Michael Kormos Photography was established that same year, with the goal of providing world-class baby and family portraits. As the business grew, Michael's wife - Sophie, took on the marketing and management roles, to help streamline the volume of clients coming through the door.

2013

By 2013, they had signed a lease for a commercial photo loft in midtown Manhattan, cementing their brand as New York City's premier family portrait photographer.

Michael credits his success to dedicated specialization. Instead of being a jack-of-all-trades, he believes the key is to shift your optics on a subject matter you inherently love, and devote yourself to it 110%. His commitment to his children is reflected in his personal approach during his sessions. "By getting to know my subjects, putting them at ease, and treating each photo session as a play date, I remove all of the commandeering structures that otherwise eclipse this dynamic."

2019

By 2019, the studio has moved to a new, larger space. Offering a dedicated reception/waiting area, make-up station, walk-in wardrobe, and the square footage that would facilitate more creative options, as well as client comfort.

In addition to his lifelong dedication to professional photography in the New York area, Michael enjoys listening to classical music (with Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Chopin being his favorites), reading about the latest discoveries in astronomy, and providing flight instruction to aspiring pilots at a local airport. Michael is a certified flight instructor, and holds a commercial pilot license.

OUR MOST FAVORITE QUESTIONS

about michael kormos photography

Has Michael always used a digital camera?

Michael has used a film camera (Nikon N70) as recently as 2004, shooting on Kodak Portra 160 film, and for his landscapes—Fujichrome Velvia 50. As digital sensors continued to improve, he ultimately switched to a digital Nikon SLR, largely due to economics and workflow feasibility. He still owns Exakta II - his first camera from 1950s, although it's no longer in a working order.

What is your trick to getting children to be so comfortable in front of the camera?

Michael attributes much of this effort to his wife, and baby wrangler extraordinaire - Sophie. With a backpack full of tricks and distractions, including bubble dispensers, squeaky toys, and sock puppets, Sophie's ready for anything. While she wrangles the toddlers and elicits natural smiles, Michael takes the perfect shot.

The backgrounds in Michael's portraits look like pictures from a fairly tale book. What does it take to produce such quality photos in NYC?

Much of it comes from Michael's background as a landscape photographer:

- Knowing how to read light, and scheduling photoshoots only during the golden hour.

- Exposure bracketing for high-contrast scenes, and utilizing graduated neutral density filters.

- Placing subjects in full shade, with an open sky above helps to create a natural soft box.

- Framing his shots using the rule of thirds, and utilizing white space for dramatic effect.

Do you shoot weddings?

In order to provide our clients with photography of high caliber, we focus our creative energy exclusively on baby, family, and senior portraits in the New York City area. Photographing events such as weddings would draw our focus away from our core values.

I'd love to take my Senior Portraits in New York with multiple wardrobe changes. How do you change your clothes in a busy city environment?

Good question! And a fairly simple answer too. We use a portable pop-up changing tent, which can be erected anywhere in a matter of seconds. This allows our high school seniors to change in privacy no matter where they are. So bring as many clothing changes for your senior photoshoot in NYC as you can carry!

“Flor has a way with our children. She lets us relax and be ourselves, and somewhere in doing that, she creates magic.“

- Jessica Sutton, client since 2011
